Actually, you might speak about anything that is happening to you in your life at the present. A good spiritual director, with their feedback and questions, will assist you convert your life-experiences to God-experiences.

    You might speak about what happens in your moments of prayer. You might share your God-experiences. These sessions do not have to be problem-focused. But you might also discuss your problems in faith, prayer, relationships, and life. Spiritual directors believe that all these have the potential to draw you to God.

  • Spiritual directors do not replace the function of catechesis that is usually offered by your Church, besides the liturgy you are participating in. Spiritual directors do not discuss dogma or the teaching of the Bible or Church.

What happens in these sessions of prayer could become the material for your future spiritual accompaniment sessions. Thus, you are likely to grow in faith.

  • You are likely to benefit a lot from having a spiritual director to assist you discern the message or the voices you are hearing. They could be from God. A spiritual director will only assist you to discern for yourself. They will not speak for God!

  • Definitely! Spiritual Accompaniment is likely to help you get in touch with your own desire for God. A trained spiritual director can assist you to clarify to yourself the reasons you might be a non-believer, and accompany you in your search for God, at your own pace, according to your own tradition.

  • Yes. There are some non-Catholic spiritual directors who are trained. The database of spiritual directors on this website includes some of them.

  • A spiritual director is trained and is bound by the Code of Practice to respect each one’s faith tradition, and their faith journey. It is better to clarify this matter with the one you choose to be your spiritual director.

  • In Kenya, counsellors and therapists charge somewhere between Ksh. 2000 and 4000. Some charge even more. Using this as an indication, you might agree with your spiritual director about the remunerations before you begin the journey. Remember, spiritual directors have invested on their training. And their time can also be monetised. But let the financial issue not hold you back from seeking spiritual accompaniment.
